Caring for Your Silk & Shadows Pieces

Luxury fabrics deserve a little extra attention. Follow these simple guidelines to keep your lingerie, sleepwear, bras, and swimwear looking beautiful for longer.

General Rules

  • Always check the care label on each piece
  • Use cold water and a mild, gentle detergent
  • Never use bleach, fabric softener, or harsh stain removers
  • Avoid the dryer — heat breaks down delicate fibers and elastic
  • Store pieces flat or hung in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight

Lace & Sheer Lingerie

Lace and sheer mesh are delicate by nature.

  • Hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent
  • Gently swish — never wring, twist, or scrub
  • Rinse thoroughly in cold water
  • Lay flat on a clean towel to dry, reshaping as needed
  • Avoid hanging wet lace, as it can stretch

For bodysuits and teddies, close any hooks or clasps before washing to prevent snagging.

Silk & Satin Sleepwear

Silk and satin need a gentle touch to keep their soft drape and sheen.

  • Hand wash in cold water with a silk-safe or mild detergent
  • If using a machine, place in a mesh laundry bag on the delicate cycle
  • Do not soak for long periods
  • Roll in a towel to remove excess water — never wring
  • Hang or lay flat to dry away from direct heat and sunlight
  • Iron on low heat inside-out only if needed, or use a steamer

Velvet

Velvet has a soft pile that can crush if treated roughly.

  • Spot clean when possible
  • Hand wash in cold water only if necessary
  • Do not wring or twist
  • Lay flat to dry — never put velvet in the dryer
  • Once dry, gently brush the pile with a soft clothes brush or clean soft toothbrush to restore the texture

Bras

Proper care helps maintain shape, support, and elasticity.

  • Hand wash in cold water with mild detergent
  • Gently squeeze suds through the fabric — avoid scrubbing the cups
  • Reshape the cups while damp
  • Lay flat or hang by the center gore (not by the straps) to dry
  • Never put bras in the dryer
  • Fasten hooks before washing so they don’t catch on other items

Rotate your bras and avoid wearing the same one multiple days in a row so the elastic can recover.

Storage Tips

  • Store lingerie and sleepwear in a drawer with tissue paper or in breathable fabric bags
  • Keep bras with cups nested or stacked carefully so they hold their shape
  • Avoid overcrowding hangers or drawers, which can stretch or crush delicate fabrics
  • Keep pieces away from sharp jewelry, zippers, and rough surfaces

A Note on Longevity

Delicate fabrics will naturally show signs of wear over time with regular use. Hand washing, air drying, and thoughtful storage are the best ways to keep your Silk & Shadows pieces feeling and looking their best.
